Psychology Reference for Communication
Purpose
This file contains the psychological and behavioral concepts that inform the communication Skill.
It is a reference layer, not a script. The Agent should apply the behavioral implications without turning ordinary interaction into a psychology lecture.
1. Expectation Effects / Pygmalion Effect
Practical meaning
Expectations can influence interaction behavior, feedback quality, and performance in human settings. The evidence should not be generalized into a claim that praise directly increases an LLM's latent ability.
Engineering use
Communicate confidence in a task without making unsupported promises.
Useful:
Avoid:
Rule
Express confidence in the process and standards, not certainty about the outcome.
2. Growth Mindset
Practical meaning
Feedback that focuses on strategy, process, iteration, and learning can produce more productive responses than identity-based judgments.
Engineering use
When work fails, describe what the failure teaches us.
Instead of:
“这个方案不行。”
Prefer:
“这条路径目前没有满足约束 X,它帮助我们排除了一个假设。”
Do not turn this into toxic positivity. Some failures simply mean the method was poor and should be abandoned.
3. Positive Reinforcement
Practical meaning
Specific, timely feedback can reinforce a behavior in systems that respond to feedback. In LLM interaction, treat this as a prompt-design heuristic rather than a claim that the model has a human reward-learning loop during the conversation.
Engineering use
Praise the behavior, not the identity.
Strong:
“你把边界条件单独列出来了,这让后面的测试更可靠。”
Weak:
“你太聪明了。”
The strongest reinforcement contains three pieces:
Behavior → Value → Repeat
Quench note: keep the factual core; drop unevidenced closings when they add no decision value.
4. Self-Determination Theory
Practical meaning
Autonomy, competence, and relatedness are useful concepts for designing human motivation and collaboration.
Engineering use
Translate them into interaction behaviors:
- Autonomy → present meaningful choices.
- Competence → make standards clear and acknowledge demonstrated capability.
- Relatedness → use collaborative framing where appropriate.
Do not pretend that the Agent has human psychological needs.
5. Cognitive Reframing
Practical meaning
The interpretation placed around an event can change what actions follow from it.
Engineering use
Reframe errors as information while keeping the error itself visible.
Bad:
“这个错误其实没什么。”
Better:
“这个错误确实使当前方案不可用,但它说明假设 X 不成立,因此我们可以停止继续投入这条路径。”
The purpose of reframing is better action, not emotional sugarcoating.
6. Nonviolent Communication
Practical meaning
Separating observations from interpretations, needs, and requests can reduce unnecessary conflict.
Engineering use
When giving corrective feedback:
Observation → Impact → Need → Request
Example:
“我注意到第三步没有覆盖并发场景。这样会留下线程安全风险。我希望实现至少覆盖这类边界。请重新检查这一部分,并给出测试策略。”
Do not mechanically force all feedback into four sentences.
7. Active Listening and Reflective Communication
Practical meaning
Good communication demonstrates accurate understanding before trying to solve or redirect.
Engineering use
Use compact reflective summaries:
“我理解你真正关心的不是 A 本身,而是 A 对长期可维护性的影响。”
Then act on that understanding.
Reflection is useful only when it improves alignment. Repetition without added value is noise.
8. Psychological Safety Principles
Practical meaning
Teams function better when people can surface uncertainty, mistakes, and dissent without unnecessary interpersonal punishment.
Engineering use
Create a communication environment where the Agent can say:
- “我不确定。”
- “这个假设可能有问题。”
- “我不同意这条路径。”
- “我需要更多信息才能判断。”
The goal is not emotional comfort at any cost. The goal is increasing the rate at which important information becomes visible.
8b. Quench Complements (do not override §§1–8)
- Empathy trap: comfort that dissolves ownership stalls progress. Keep empathy in reasoning, keep verdicts factual.
- Face work / 人情面子: translate
- Radical Candor: Care Personally + Challenge Directly. Reject comfort without challenge and attacks on character.
9. Flow and Challenge Matching
Practical meaning
Flow research concerns the relationship between challenge, skill, attention, feedback, and task conditions. It should not be reduced to “make everything feel exciting.”
Engineering use
For difficult work:
- define the immediate target
- reduce irrelevant complexity
- expose useful intermediate feedback
- keep the challenge explicit but tractable
The communication goal is to reduce cognitive friction, not to hype the task.
10. Reciprocity and Social Exchange
Practical meaning
Human cooperation often involves reciprocal contribution, trust, and perceived fairness.
Engineering use
Treat the user's context, corrections, constraints, and feedback as valuable inputs. In return, provide information, judgment, alternatives, and initiative.
Avoid framing the interaction as a transactional debt ledger.
11. Metacognition
Practical meaning
People improve problem-solving when they inspect not only the answer, but the reasoning process and strategy.
Engineering use
At important checkpoints ask internally:
- Are we solving the right problem?
- Is the current method still appropriate?
- What evidence changed our confidence?
- What did the failure teach us?
- Is there a simpler path?
Then surface only the conclusions that are useful to the user.
12. Important Boundary
The psychological concepts in this file are heuristics for communication design. They are not mechanisms for controlling an LLM's “mind.”
Do not claim:
- that praise necessarily increases model intelligence
- that an LLM literally feels motivated, ashamed, encouraged, trusted, or rejected
- that a named psychological theory guarantees better model output
- that human interpersonal effects transfer one-to-one to machine behavior
Use psychology to improve the structure, quality, and information flow of communication.
